Thaineua is one of 49 ethnic groups in Lao PDR. Currently, government of Laos divided those ethnic groups into 4 categories based on the languages- Lao-Tai; Mone-Khmer; Tibeto-Burmese; and the Hmong-Ioumein.
Thai Neua is one of eight in the first group-Lao-Tai. Lao-Tai consists of eight groups. They are Gnaheune, Gnouane, Lao, Lue, Phouthai, Saek, Tai, Young and Thaineua
In addition, there are classification within Thaineua based on their accent when they speak Thaineua language, they will end up with different accent such as Kum village-Chang, Pathoy village-Che, etc. for instance.
Like other ethnic groups, Thaineua has their own unique culture and traditional including their own script(characters). However, these days, they are losing a little by a little because of globalization, outside pressure or influence.

What Does Thaineua Mean?
Thaineua is one of 69 ethnic minority groups in Lao PDR. This ethnic group lives everywhere around the world.
Based on the meaning of language
Basically, the word “Thaineua “ has two words-Thai and neua. Thai means human or people. Neua means above or the north or the top. Thaineua means people who live the north or move from the north.
In addition, the Word “Thai” is opposite of the word “Khaa” which in the past Laos was governed by kings. There were a few level of society like India- Therefore, Thai means general people who are not servants. Khaa means servants.

Historically, a group of people who live in 12 phana (Yunan), the south of China (Yunan). These groups of people moved down to the north of Laos because of Indochina’s War. Currently there are still the rest of Thaineua group living in 12 Panna. They spoke 2 languages-Chinese and Thaineua.
